O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from being overpowered by men (or people).
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.
When to Read
We've all been there: a knot in your stomach as you get ready to face the day, worried about how others might perceive you, especially your appearance. Perhaps it's a new outfit, a change in your hair, or simply feeling a general self-consciousness about how you look. This powerful dua, seeking refuge from `al-hamm` (anxiety) and `al-hazan` (sorrow), is a perfect companion during these moments. The phrase `ghalabatir-rijal` – being overpowered by people – directly speaks to the feeling of being overwhelmed by external pressures and opinions, including the anxiety of being judged for how you present yourself. Recite this dua whenever you feel these pangs of self-doubt or concern about others' perceptions, whether it's before a social gathering, after a difficult interaction, or simply as part of your daily remembrance to fortify your heart.
How to Read
When you turn to Allah with this supplication, remember to do so with a heart full of sincerity and absolute conviction in His ability to grant you relief. Though not obligatory, making wudu before reciting duas can help you feel more connected and focused. Raise your hands in humility, acknowledging your need for Allah's protection and assistance. As you utter each phrase, truly reflect on its meaning: you are actively seeking refuge from these specific afflictions. Envision yourself placing your worries, including the concern about how others see you, directly into Allah's care.
