Dua for Relief from the Anxieties of Parenthood

Anxiety & Distress
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3712

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is inevitable, and Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or that You have taught to anyone from Your creation, or that You have revealed in Your Book, or that You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my sorrow, and the remover of my anxieties.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabii'a qalbi, wa nuura sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaaba hammi.

When to Read

This is a profound dua taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for when you feel overwhelmed by worry, sadness, or any kind of distress. As a parent, the anxieties can be magnified – worrying about your child's well-being, their future, your ability to provide, and so much more. Recite this at any time you feel these burdens weighing on you, especially during moments of quiet reflection or when you feel your heart tightening with worry.

How to Read

The Prophet ﷺ taught this dua to a man who was suffering from extreme worry. The etiquette is to recite it with sincerity and conviction, believing in Allah's power to ease your burdens. Raise your hands as you do when making other duas, and try to face the Qiblah. Focus on the meaning of the words, internalizing the reliance on Allah and His Book.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a beautiful acknowledgment of Allah's absolute power and control ('My forelock is in Your hand') while simultaneously seeking the ultimate solace and guidance found in the Qur'an. By asking for the Qur'an to be the 'springtime of the heart,' the 'light of the chest,' and the 'banisher of sorrow and remover of anxiety,' we are asking for a complete spiritual renewal and peace that can only come from Allah. This is particularly relevant for parents, whose hearts are deeply connected to their children and whose worries can be profound.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'No one asks for something with [this dua] except that Allah takes away his distress and replaces it with joy.' A man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we learn these words?' He said: 'Yes, indeed! It is necessary for everyone who hears them to learn them.'
