Dua for Relief from the Agitation of Waiting for Important News

Anxiety & Distress
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3701

O Allah, indeed I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective. Your judgment of me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which is with You, to make the Qur'an the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my grief, and a reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abdik, ibn 'abdik, ibn amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukkumuka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitabiik, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabii'a qalbi, wa nuura sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaaba hammi.

When to Read

This profound supplication is ideal to recite when you are experiencing deep worry or distress, especially when awaiting significant news. It's particularly relevant when the waiting period itself is causing mental anguish, agitation, or a sense of helplessness. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to a companion when he complained of distress, highlighting its power in alleviating emotional burdens.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full presence, focusing on each word and its meaning. It's best to say it after Fard prayers, or during times of personal supplication (du'a). Raise your hands as you would in normal dua, and have conviction that Allah (SWT) has the power to relieve your worries and grant you ease, regardless of the outcome you are awaiting. The phrasing emphasizes our utter reliance on Allah, acknowledging His absolute control over our affairs.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the pain of grief and anxiety by seeking refuge in Allah and asking Him to make the Qur'an the source of solace and peace. It acknowledges Allah's absolute dominion and wisdom, thereby fostering patience and trust (tawakkul). By calling upon Allah by His most beautiful names and attributes, the supplicant strengthens their connection with their Creator, seeking His intervention in a manner that encompasses all His power and knowledge. The Prophet ﷺ assured the companion who learned this dua that Allah would remove his sorrow and replace it with joy.

Source & Authentication

The Companion Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'There is no one who is afflicted with grief or distress and says (this dua) but Allah (SWT) will remove his grief and replace his distress with joy.' He was asked if the people should learn these words. The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'Yes, they should be taught them.' So, we learned them and taught them to our children. (Ahmad narrated it, and Abu Ya'la, and Ibn Hibban in his Sahih reported it as well. Al-Albani authenticated it as Hasan).
