Dua for Relief from Chest Tightness and Worry

Anxiety & Distress
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This powerful dua is perfect for those moments when your chest feels tight, a heaviness settles upon your heart, and worries begin to consume your thoughts. It's a comprehensive supplication that addresses both emotional distress and practical anxieties. Recite it whenever you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or burdened by life's challenges. You can say it in the morning, evening, or at any point during the day when you need to reconnect with Allah and seek His solace.

How to Read

Find a quiet place where you can focus. Raise your hands slightly, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us is a sign of earnest supplication. Recite the dua with sincerity and conviction, truly feeling the need for Allah's protection. Understand the meaning of each phrase – acknowledging your own weakness and His absolute power. Repeat it multiple times if you feel it necessary, letting the words sink into your heart.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a shield against debilitating emotional states like worry (hamm) and sorrow (hazan). It also seeks refuge from internal weaknesses such as helplessness ('ajz) and laziness (kasal), which can prevent us from taking action and seeking solutions. Furthermore, it protects against character flaws like cowardice (jubn) and stinginess (buhl). The inclusion of seeking refuge from overwhelming debt (ghalabatud-dayn) and the subjugation of men (qahrur-rijal) shows the comprehensive nature of this dua, addressing significant worldly pressures that can contribute to distress. By reciting this, we are actively turning to Allah, the Most High, for His divine assistance and protection, which is the ultimate source of peace.
