Dua for Release from the Anguish of Homesickness and Separation

Anxiety & Distress
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, and from the heavy burden of debt and the overpowering of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min hammi wa huzani, wa 'ajzi wa kasali, wa jubni wa bukhli, wa dala'id-daini wa ghalabatir-rijal.

‘Abdullah (bin Mas’ud) said: The Prophet ﷺ said: 'No person suffers a calamity and says: Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un, Allahumma u'jurni fi musibati, wakhluf li khairan minha (We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. O Allah! Reward me in my affliction and give me something better than it in exchange), but Allah will reward me in my affliction and will give me something better than it in exchange.' He said: And Abu Bakr, when he was wronged by the king, said: 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un, Allahumma u'jurni fi musibati, wakhluf li khairan minha (We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. O Allah! Reward me in my affliction and give me something better than it in exchange).' So Allah gave him something better in exchange. He was given the Khilafah. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'What is this?' He said: 'O Allah's Messenger! Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un, Allahumma u'jurni fi musibati, wakhluf li khairan minha (We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. O Allah! Reward me in my affliction and give me something better than it in exchange).' So Allah gave him something better in exchange. He was given the Khilafah. The Prophet ﷺ also said: 'There is no servant who says: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min hammi wa huzani, wa 'ajzi wa kasali, wa jubni wa bukhli, wa dala'id-daini wa ghalabatir-rijal (O Allah! I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, and from the heavy burden of debt and the overpowering of men), but Allah will take away his worry and grief, and will give him in place of them ease.' I (the narrator) said: 'O Allah's Messenger! I have learned these words.' He said: 'Yes, so learn them and teach them to the others.'
