Dua for Protection from the Anxiety of the Grave and the Day of Judgement

Anxiety & Distress
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6375

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of the Fire, and from the trial of wealth and poverty, and from the trial of the grave, and from the evil of the trial of the Masih ad-Dajjal. O Allah, wash my heart with the water of snow and hail, and cleanse my heart from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt, and set me far apart from my sins as You have set far apart the East and the West.

When to Read

This is a powerful supplication that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would frequently recite in his prayers, particularly in the Tashahhud (the final sitting before the Salam). It's a good practice for us to make it a regular part of our own prayers, whether obligatory or voluntary, and to recite it at other times when feeling overwhelmed by thoughts of the hereafter.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere conviction, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. Picture the scenes of the grave and the Day of Judgement, and feel your reliance on Allah for protection. The supplication is part of the prayer, so it should be recited with the body in the posture of prayer. When reciting outside of prayer, raise your hands as you would for other duas.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking refuge from some of the most profound and terrifying trials we will face: the punishment of the grave, the punishment of the Hellfire, the trials of this world (wealth and poverty), and the immense tribulation of the Dajjal. By reciting it, we are actively asking Allah for His divine protection against these immense fears, seeking both worldly comfort and eternal salvation. The latter part of the dua is a beautiful request for spiritual purification, asking Allah to cleanse our hearts from sins just as a white garment is purified from stains.

Narrated Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): I used to see the Prophet ﷺ supplicating in prayer: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of the Fire, and from the trial of life and death and the trial of the Masih ad-Dajjal." She added: And the Prophet ﷺ also used to supplicate: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave, and from the trial of poverty, and from the trial of the Dajjal. O Allah, set my heart right." And he said: "And he who is protected on that Day from the punishment of the grave, he is protected." And he also said: "And he who is protected on that Day from the trial of the Masih ad-Dajjal, he is protected." And he also said: "And he who is protected on that Day from the trial of the Fire, he is protected." And he also said: "And he who is protected on that Day from the trial of poverty, he is protected." And he also said: "And he who is protected on that Day from the trial of the heart, he is protected." Another narration adds: "O Allah, wash my heart with the water of snow and hail, and cleanse my heart from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt, and set me far apart from my sins as You have set far apart the East and the West."
