اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ وَسَيِّئَاتِ الأَحْلاَمِ

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the actions of Shaytan and from bad dreams.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'amalish-shaytani wa sayyi'atil-ahlam

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when you wake up from a disturbing dream, or even before sleeping if you're experiencing recurrent nightmares. Reciting it in the morning upon waking can also help ward off lingering feelings of anxiety from the dream.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, with full conviction in Allah's power to protect you. It's recommended to do this upon waking from a bad dream. Some scholars also advise spitting to your left three times and seeking refuge in Allah from Shaytan, in addition to reciting this dua, as taught by the Prophet ﷺ in other narrations concerning bad dreams. Turn over to your other side if you can.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a direct shield against the whispers and machinations of Shaytan, which can manifest as disturbing thoughts and dreams. By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge His ultimate control over all matters, including our sleep and our minds, bringing peace and averting distress.

Source & Authentication

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "When one of you sees a bad dream, he should spit to his left three times and seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan and from the evil of the dream (three times), and turn over on his side from the side on which he turned over (in the first instance)." Jabir further reported: I said to him (Allah's Messenger ﷺ): "Then what is the (form of) utterance?" He said: "You should say: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'amalish-shaytani wa sayyi'atil-ahlam (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the actions of Shaytan and from the evil dreams)."
