Dua for Peace of Mind Regarding Deceased Loved Ones

Anxiety & Distress
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 703

O Allah, forgive the believing men and believing women, and the Muslim men and Muslim women, those who are alive among them and those who are deceased. Verily, You are the All-Hearing, the Ever-Near, the Responder of prayers.

Allahummaghfir lil-mu'mineena wal-mu'minaat, wal-muslimeena wal-muslimaati, ahyaaihim wa amwaatahim, innaka samee'un qareebun mujeebud-da'awaat.

When to Read

This dua is powerful when you find yourself constantly thinking about the state of your deceased loved ones, worrying about their akhirah (hereafter) or feeling a sense of guilt. Recite it during your daily prayers, after Fajr, or any time you feel overwhelmed by these thoughts. It's a way to actively entrust them to Allah's mercy and find peace in His divine plan.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart, focusing on Allah's immense mercy. Raise your hands as you would for supplication, maintaining a state of purity if possible. Reflect on the meaning of the words, entrusting your loved ones to the One who has the ultimate knowledge and power over all affairs.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive supplication seeks forgiveness for all believing men and women, both living and deceased. By extending this prayer to the deceased, we acknowledge our connection to them and express our hope for their well-being in the hereafter. It shifts our focus from personal worry to seeking Allah's vast forgiveness for the entire Ummah, fostering a sense of communal responsibility and finding comfort in the knowledge that Allah hears and answers our prayers for others. This act of seeking mercy for others often brings peace and tranquility to the one making the dua, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: 'Whoever asks for forgiveness for the believing men and women, Allah will write for him a good deed for each believing man and woman.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 121) – though this specific hadith is about asking forgiveness for all believers, the principle of communal supplication bringing blessings applies.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: an ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). The dua taught above is a direct supplication for the deceased, embodying the spirit of seeking Allah's mercy for them.
