Dua for Peace of Mind When Facing Unexpected Personal Crises

Anxiety & Distress
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 3946

"O Allah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your female slave. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your judgement over me is just. I ask You by every Name that You have called Yourself with, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Quran the delight of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my sadness and a remover of my anxieties."

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabi-ka, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabee'a qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaaba hammi.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is incredibly relevant when unexpected crises hit, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and anxious. Whether it’s a sudden financial loss, a health scare, or family turmoil, reciting this dua can help anchor your heart and mind. It’s especially beneficial to turn to this when you feel your usual coping mechanisms are failing and you need a profound spiritual connection to find solace.

How to Read

Before reciting, take a moment to collect yourself. Ideally, face the Qiblah. Raise your hands, keeping them close together. Utter the words with sincerity and conviction, believing in Allah's power and mercy. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, particularly the request to make the Quran a source of comfort and guidance. Repeat it as often as you feel the need, especially during times of personal distress.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the root of anxiety and distress by turning to Allah and His Book. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this dua to a companion to alleviate sadness and worry, highlighting its efficacy. By asking Allah to make the Quran the 'delight of my heart,' 'light of my chest,' 'banisher of my sadness,' and 'remover of my anxieties,' we are seeking a comprehensive spiritual remedy for mental and emotional turmoil. It is a profound way to connect with Allah's guidance and find inner peace, acknowledging His ultimate control over all affairs.

Source & Authentication

Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I feel ill at ease and anxious." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him, "Shall I not teach you some words that, if you say them, Allah will remove anxiety from your heart and relieve your worry?" The man said, "Certainly." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O Allah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your female slave. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your judgement over me is just. I ask You by every Name that You have called Yourself with, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Quran the delight of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my sadness and a remover of my anxieties." So the man said this, and Allah removed his anxiety and relieved his worry. (Narrated by Ahmad and graded Hasan).
