Dua for Inner Peace Amidst Digital Overload

Anxiety & Distress
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

Recite this dua when you feel overwhelmed by the constant stream of information, notifications, and pressures from the digital world. It's particularly helpful when this leads to feelings of anxiety, sadness, inadequacy, or a sense of being trapped by your online presence.

How to Read

Recite this supplication with sincerity, raising your hands if possible, and truly reflecting on the meanings of each phrase. Imagine seeking Allah's protection from these specific afflictions. It can be recited at any time, but is especially potent during moments of distress or when you intentionally disconnect from digital distractions to connect with your Creator.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, seeks refuge in Allah from the very afflictions that can plague us in our hyper-connected age: anxiety (hamm) and sorrow (hazan) often arise from perceived pressures and the negative impacts of online content. Helplessness ('ajz) and laziness (kasal) can stem from comparing ourselves to others or feeling drained by constant engagement. Cowardice (jubn) and stinginess (bukhl) might surface as we fear missing out or cling to digital validation. While debt and oppression are direct concerns, the underlying feeling of being overwhelmed can echo these sentiments. By reciting this, we are asking Allah for strength, peace, and freedom from these internal and external struggles.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ﷺ used to invoke: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and sorrow, helplessness and laziness, cowardice and miserliness, and the burden of debt and the domination of men). Sahih al-Bukhari 6369.
