Dua for Calming the Heart During Moments of Sudden Panic and Overwhelm

Anxiety & Distress
Hasan HadithAl-Mustadrak 'ala al-Sahihain 1868

O Ever-Living, O Self-Subsisting, by Your mercy I seek relief. Rectify for me all of my affairs and do not entrust me to myself for even the blink of an eye.

*Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum, bi rahmatika astaghith, aslih li sha'ni kullah, wa la takilni ila nafsi tarfata 'ayn.*

When to Read

This powerful supplication is best recited when you feel your heart racing, your thoughts spinning out of control, and a sense of intense panic or overwhelm washing over you. It's a lifeline to anchor yourself when the world feels like it's closing in. Say it as soon as you recognize the signs of distress, whether it's during a stressful meeting, a sudden anxious thought, or a moment of unexpected difficulty.

How to Read

Recite this dua with full sincerity and conviction, focusing on the meaning of the words. Utterly surrender your affairs to Allah, acknowledging His control over everything and your own need for His constant support. It's recommended to say it while raising your hands slightly, as is the practice during supplication, and to breathe deeply and deliberately as you speak, seeking to calm your physical and emotional state through your connection with the Creator.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound expression of Tawakkul (reliance on Allah). By calling upon His Ever-Living and Self-Subsisting attributes ('Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum'), you acknowledge His ultimate power and independence, while by seeking refuge in His mercy ('bi rahmatika astaghith'), you affirm your dependence on His grace. The request to 'rectify all my affairs' encompasses seeking good in both this life and the next, and the plea 'do not entrust me to myself' highlights the human weakness and the critical need for Allah's ongoing guidance and protection to navigate life's challenges without succumbing to despair or making critical errors.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, 'O people, there is no one who has been afflicted with a trial and says: 'We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. O Allah, reward me for my affliction and give me that which is better in exchange for it,' except that Allah will reward him for his affliction and give him that which is better in exchange for it.' He (peace be upon him) also said: 'Supplicate a lot using: O Ever-Living, O Self-Subsisting, by Your mercy I seek relief. Rectify for me all of my affairs and do not entrust me to myself for even the blink of an eye.' *Note: The full hadith contains two separate supplications, but the second part is directly relevant to overcoming overwhelming situations and panic.*
