A Prophet's Plea: Dua for a Good End Amidst Life's Anxieties

Anxiety & Distress
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3539

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ حُسْنَ الْخَاتِمَةِ

O Allah, I ask You for a good end.

Allahumma inni as'aluka husnal khatimah

When to Read

This is a profoundly important dua to make regularly, especially when you find yourself overwhelmed by the anxieties and uncertainties of life. Life's trials can distract us, and the ultimate peace we seek is to leave this world with our faith intact and our deeds pleasing to Allah. Make it a habit to recite this after your obligatory prayers, during your supplications, or any time you feel the weight of the world pressing down.

How to Read

Recite this with sincerity and deep reflection, truly feeling the need for Allah's mercy in your final moments. Imagine yourself approaching the end of your life, and plead with Allah to grant you the best possible conclusion, one that pleases Him and leads you to His Jannah. Raise your hands in supplication, as is the etiquette for asking Allah directly, and let the meaning sink into your heart.

Virtues & Benefits

The ultimate goal for a believer is to die in a state of 'Husnul Khatimah' – a good end. This means dying with faith, repentance, and in a manner that is pleasing to Allah. This simple yet powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is a direct request for this immense blessing. By asking for a good end, we are essentially asking Allah to keep us steadfast throughout our lives, to forgive our shortcomings, and to grant us a peaceful departure, free from His anger, and as a pathway to His Paradise.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to supplicate frequently: 'O Allah, I ask You for a good end, and I seek refuge in You from an evil end.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3539, graded Hasan by scholars of hadith). The context of this dua is the constant need for a believer to be mindful of their ultimate return to Allah. Life's anxieties can be a distraction, but this supplication brings our focus back to what truly matters: leaving this world in a state of iman (faith) and acceptance of Allah's will.
