Dua for Remaining Calm When Plans are Disrupted by Others

Anger
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 24094

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your judgment on me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or kept hidden in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the delight of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my grief, and a reliever of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qada'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabila, aw asta'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jila'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi

When to Read

This powerful supplication is incredibly useful when you find your carefully laid plans suddenly derailed, especially when it’s due to the actions or negligence of others. It can happen in family matters, at work, or even during simple outings. When you feel that frustration bubbling up, or the heat of anger rising because something you worked hard for is undone or delayed, take a moment to turn to this dua. It's a profound reminder that ultimate control rests with Allah, and seeking His help can transform our reaction from anger to acceptance and peace.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a focused heart. Imagine yourself completely in Allah's control, acknowledging His wisdom and justice in every situation. Raising your hands slightly can enhance the feeling of supplication. It's best recited when you first realize your plans are disrupted, before the anger takes root, but it can also be beneficial even if you're already feeling agitated. Understanding the meaning and reflecting on the names of Allah mentioned within is key to its effectiveness.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a comprehensive request to Allah for contentment and peace of mind. By acknowledging His sovereignty ('My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your judgment on me is just.'), we shift our focus from the external disruption to our internal state and our connection with Allah. Making the Qur'an the 'delight of the heart, light of the chest, banisher of grief, and reliever of anxiety' is a direct path to spiritual well-being. When our hearts are content with Allah's decree and the Qur'an is our guide, external disruptions lose their power to disturb us.

Source & Authentication

Al-Hafiz Al-Mundhiri said in Al-Targhib wa Al-Tarhib: "It was narrated from Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'No servant is afflicted by any anxiety or grief, and says: O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is forever executed. Your judgment on me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or taught to any one of Your creation, or revealed in Your Book, or kept hidden in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the delight of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my grief, and a reliever of my anxiety – except that Allah will remove his anxiety and grief and replace them with happiness.' He was asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn these words?' He said: 'Yes, it is incumbent upon everyone who hears them to learn them.'" (Reported by Ahmad, and the chain of narration is good).
