Seeking Refuge from the Grave's Torment After Prayer

After Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1377

O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of Hellfire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa min 'adhab jahannam, wa min fitnat al-mahya wal-mamat, wa min shar fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal

When to Read

This dua is specifically recommended to be recited after the final *tashahhud* and before the *tasleem* (salutations) in the obligatory prayers. It’s a crucial moment just before concluding your connection with Allah in prayer, a time when supplication is potent.

How to Read

Recite this plea with sincere intention and heartfelt earnestness. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, understanding that you are consciously seeking Allah’s protection from profound trials. Ensure you complete the prayer by reciting the *tasleem* after this supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, addresses four critical areas of seeking refuge: the torment of the grave, the punishment of Hellfire, the afflictions of this life and the hereafter, and the severe trial of the Dajjal. By seeking protection in these specific ways, we are asking Allah to safeguard us from immense hardships that lie beyond our worldly control. The Prophet ﷺ emphasized its importance, making it a regular part of his own prayers.

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to invoke Allah during his prayer, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat ad-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnat al-mahya wa fitnat al-mamat. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-ma'tham wa al-maghram (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the torment of the grave, and I seek refuge with You from the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal), and I seek refuge with You from the trials of life and the trial of death. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from sin and debt).' Then a man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what makes debt more pressing?' He said: 'A man gets killed in the path of Allah and then he is brought back to life, and then he is killed again, and he is in debt, so he does not get the reward of martyrdom due to his debt.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1377, also found in Sahih Muslim 588 with slight variations).
