Seeking Allah's Protection from the Torment of the Grave After Salah

After Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of the Fire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal (the Antichrist).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa min 'adhab an-nar, wa min fitnat al-hayah wal-mafat, wa min sharri fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. While it's a set supplication, focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly seeking Allah's refuge. It's traditionally recited in the final sitting of the prayer, after reciting the Tashahhud and before the Tasleem (salutation of peace).

Virtues & Benefits

The torment of the grave is a reality that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned us about, and seeking refuge from it is a Sunnah. By reciting this dua, we are actively following the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ and asking Allah, the Almighty, for His ultimate protection in this life and the Hereafter. This encompasses protection from the grave's pressure, the Hellfire's flames, the tests that confront us during our lives and upon death, and the immense tribulation of the Dajjal.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach them this supplication in the prayer as he used to teach them a Surah from the Qur'an. He would say: 'Say: O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave, from the punishment of Hell-fire, from the afflictions of the Antichrist in this world and the next, and from the afflictions of the grave.' (Then the narrator) mentioned that he used to ask Allah for protection after the Tashahhud.
