O Allah, forgive [the deceased's name], raise his rank among those who are guided, and leave his descendants among those who remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Make his grave spacious for him and illuminate it for him.
Allahumma-ghfir li-fulan, irfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyeen, wakh-lufhu fi 'aqibihi fil-ghabireen, waghfir lana wa lahu ya Rabb al-'alameen, w-afsah lahu fee qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu feehi
When to Read
This dua is recommended to be recited after offering the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) for a deceased Muslim. It can also be recited individually after any prayer when remembering a departed soul, seeking Allah's immense mercy for them.
How to Read
When reciting this dua, it is customary to place your right hand over your chest and face the direction of the Qiblah (or the grave if present). Replace 'fulan' with the actual name of the deceased. Speak with sincerity and humility, focusing your heart on seeking Allah's forgiveness and mercy for the departed. The prayer is offered seeking Allah's acceptance.
Virtues & Benefits
This powerful supplication directly asks Allah for several profound mercies for the deceased: forgiveness of sins, an elevated status among the righteous, a good legacy left behind, and a spacious, illuminated resting place in the grave. It emphasizes our role as believers in continuing to pray for those who have passed, as their deeds have ceased, but their need for our supplications continues. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this specific wording, highlighting its importance in seeking the best for our departed brothers and sisters.

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Prophet (ﷺ) prayed over a dead body, he would say: 'Allahumma-ghfir li-Hayyina wa Mayyitina, wa Shahidina wa Gha'ibina, wa Saghirina wa Kabirina, wa Dhakarina wa Unthana. Allahumma man ahya'tahu minna fa-ahyihi 'ala al-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu 'ala al-Iman. Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu wa la tudillana ba'dahu.' (O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You cause to live from among us, let him live on Islam, and whoever You cause to die from among us, let him die on faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us go astray after him.) And in another narration: 'Allahumma-ghfir li-fulan, arfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyeen, wakh-lufhu fi 'aqibihi fil-ghabireen, waghfir lana wa lahu ya Rabb al-'alameen, w-afsah lahu fee qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu feehi.' (O Allah, forgive [the deceased's name], raise his rank among those who are guided, and leave his descendants among those who remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Make his grave spacious for him and illuminate it for him.)
