After Prayer
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3921

O Allah, forgive me for all my sins, the minor and the major, the first and the last, the open and the secret. I seek refuge in You from debt, and I seek refuge in You from hardness of heart and humiliation. I seek refuge in You from the hardship of affliction and the scattering of affairs, and from provision that is a burden. And I seek refuge in You from heedlessness and neglect in religion.

Allahumma-ghfir li dhanbi kullahu, diqqahu wa jillahu, awwalahu wa akhirahu, 'alaniyatihi wa sirrahu, wa a'udhu bika min ad-dayni, wa a'udhu bika minal-qaswati wadh-dhillah, wa a'udhu bika min jahdil-ba'si, wa shatatil-amri, wa rizqin dhi mat'hamatin, wa a'udhu bika minal-ghaflati wal-ghafalati fid-deen.

When to Read

This profound supplication is particularly beneficial to recite after completing the Asr prayer. Asr is a blessed time, often referred to as the 'middle prayer' (Salat al-Wusta) in the Quran, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to be diligent in observing it. The time between Asr and Maghrib is a period where our deeds are presented to Allah, making it an excellent opportunity to seek His forgiveness and protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and heartfelt conviction. Raise your hands slightly if you wish, as is customary for supplication, and focus on the meaning of each phrase. Reflect on the vastness of Allah's forgiveness and the importance of seeking refuge in Him from all that is harmful, both in this life and the next.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encapsulates seeking forgiveness for all types of sins, acknowledging that we are prone to error. It also highlights the critical importance of seeking Allah's protection from debilitating burdens like debt, spiritual hardness, humiliation, and the disarray that can afflict our lives and endeavors. Furthermore, it addresses the subtle dangers of heedlessness and neglect in matters of faith, which can lead us astray. By reciting this, we are proactively asking Allah to safeguard our spiritual and worldly well-being.

Narrated Abdullah ibn 'Amr: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The prayer of a servant is not accepted and his stairs are not ascended for a period of forty days except for his companions (i.e. those who pray in congregation). Then he mentioned the same about the Du'a after the prayer of Asr: 'Whoever says after the Asr prayer: 'Allahumma-ghfir li dhanbi kullahu, diqqahu wa jillahu, awwalahu wa akhirahu, 'alaniyatihi wa sirrahu, wa a'udhu bika min ad-dayni, wa a'udhu bika minal-qaswati wadh-dhillah, wa a'udhu bika min jahdil-ba'si, wa shatatil-amri, wa rizqin dhi mat'hamatin, wa a'udhu bika minal-ghaflati wal-ghafalati fid-deen.' Allah will grant him forgiveness for his sins, however much they may be, and if he dies that day, he will die having been forgiven, and he will be protected from debt and humiliation, and his affairs will be made easy for him, and his sustenance will be a blessing.'
