Dua for Protection from Laziness and Incapacity After Prayer

After Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6368

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and senility, and from stinginess. And I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-harami, wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhab-il-qabri, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mawati

When to Read

This profound dua is recommended to be recited after the Tashahhud, just before the Tasleem (the final salutations) of any obligatory prayer. It's a perfect moment to seek Allah's protection as you transition from the intense connection of prayer back into your daily life.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and deep reflection. Focus on each word, truly internalizing the need for Allah's help against these debilitating states. It's a personal plea to the One who controls all matters.

Virtues & Benefits

By reciting this dua, we actively seek Allah's protection from spiritual and physical ailments that can hinder our worship and our lives. Laziness (kasal) is particularly detrimental, preventing us from fulfilling our duties to Allah and our responsibilities. Incapacity ('ajz) can leave us feeling helpless. Seeking refuge from cowardice (jubn), old age in a state of frailty (haram), and stinginess (bukhl) ensures a more robust and fulfilling existence. Furthermore, it encompasses seeking refuge from the grave's torment and the trials of this world and the Hereafter, making it a comprehensive supplication for well-being in this life and the next.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to teach his companions to seek refuge in Allah from these afflictions, just as he used to teach them a Surah from the Quran. He would say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-harami, wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhab-il-qabri, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mawati.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6368).
