Dua for Protection from Greed and Envy After Salah

After Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from being returned to the most wretched of ages, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of this world, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubn, wa a'udhu bika an uradda ila ardhali al-'umur, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dunya, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is recommended to be recited immediately after completing the obligatory prayers (salah), before engaging in any other activity. It’s a perfect moment when your heart is still connected to Allah, making your pleas more sincere.

How to Read

Recite this dua after finishing your Taslim (the final salutation of the prayer). Raise your hands if you wish, as it is permissible after the obligatory prayers, and implore Allah with humility and sincerity. Focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it, truly seeking Allah’s protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking refuge in Allah from several major evils that can plague a person. 'Al-Bukhl' (stinginess or greed) can lead to hoarding wealth and neglecting one's obligations to Allah and His creation. 'Al-Jubn' (cowardice) prevents one from standing up for truth and fulfilling duties. Being returned to 'ardhali al-'umur' (the most wretched of ages) refers to a state of extreme old age where one might become dependent and lose faculties, a state we all hope to avoid with our dignity intact. Seeking refuge from the 'fitnatid-dunya' (trial of this world) protects us from its temptations and distractions that can pull us away from our Deen. Finally, seeking refuge from 'adhabil-qabr' (punishment of the grave) is a critical request for our eternal well-being.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to teach his companions to seek refuge in Allah from these things in their prayers, saying: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubn, wa a'udhu bika an uradda ila ardhali al-'umur, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dunya, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr. (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice, and I seek refuge in You from being returned to the most wretched of ages, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of this world, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave.)
