Dua for Protection After Maghrib: Seeking Refuge in Allah's Words

After Prayer
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3893

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the whisperings of devils and from their presence.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatis-shayateeni wa an yahdurun

When to Read

This powerful dua is recommended to be recited three times after the Maghrib prayer. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this supplication as a shield against various evils as the night begins to fall, a time when Shaytan can be more active.

How to Read

After completing your Maghrib prayer and reciting the prescribed dhikr, turn your heart towards Allah. Recite this dua with sincere intention and focus, raising your hands if appropriate for supplication after prayer, and repeat it three times.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua after Maghrib provides comprehensive protection. It invokes Allah's perfect words to shield you from His displeasure, the harm caused by His creation, and the insidious whispers and presence of devils. It's a beautiful way to end your prayer with a conscious seeking of Allah's safeguard as you transition into the evening.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abdullah bin Khubaib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: 'We went out on a very dark and rainy night, looking for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to lead us in prayer. We found him and asked him: 'Will you lead us in prayer?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I said: O Messenger of Allah, teach me something that I may say in the morning and in the evening.' He said: 'O Abdullah, say: O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and in the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion and my worldly affairs, and my family and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my weaknesses and set me at ease from my anxieties. O Allah, protect me from in front of me and from behind me, and from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Might from being taken away from beneath me.' And he said: 'O Abdullah, say: O Allah, I ask You for the good which Your Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) asked for, and I seek refuge in You from the evil from which Your Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) sought refuge. And O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and whatever brings one closer to it, by word and by deed, and I seek refuge in You from the Hellfire and whatever brings one closer to it, by word and by deed.' He said: 'O Abdullah, you should glorify Allah a lot in the morning and in the evening.' When it was morning, he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me something that I may say in the morning and in the evening.' He said: 'O Abdullah, say: O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the present, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Lord of all that is, the Merciful, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of the devil, and from the evil of the disbelievers.' He said: 'Say: O Allah, I ask You for the good of this day and the good of what comes after it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this day and the evil of what comes after it. O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and whatever brings one closer to it, by word and by deed, and I seek refuge in You from the Hellfire and whatever brings one closer to it, by word and by deed.' He said: 'O Abdullah, when you enter your house, say: Peace be upon you, and salute yourself with a greeting from Allah, blessed and good.' He said: 'O Abdullah, when you pray, say: O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided, and grant me well-being among those whom You have granted well-being, and take me care of me among those whom You have taken care of, and bless me in what You have bestowed, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily, when You decree, You are not decreed against, and he whom You protect will never be humbled. Blessed are You, O Lord.' He said: 'O Abdullah, say in the morning and in the evening three times: O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the present, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Lord of all that is, the Merciful, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of the devil, and from the evil of the disbelievers.' He said: 'Say: O Allah, I ask You for the good which Your Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) asked for, and I seek refuge in You from the evil from which Your Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) sought refuge. And O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and whatever brings one closer to it, by word and by deed, and I seek refuge in You from the Hellfire and whatever brings one closer to it, by word and by deed.' He said: 'Say: O Allah, I ask You for well-being in my religion and my worldly affairs, and my family and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my weaknesses and set me at ease from my anxieties. O Allah, protect me from in front of me and from behind me, and from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Might from being taken away from beneath me.' He said: 'O Abdullah, say: O Allah, I seek refuge in Your perfect words from the anger of Allah and His punishment, and from the evil of His slaves, and from the whisperings of the devils and their presence.' He said: 'This is a supplication that you recited.' So the narrator said: 'So I said it and I hoped that Allah would accept it from me.' (This version adds more supplications, but the specific one for Maghrib is extracted from this narration, focusing on protection as night falls).
