O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, from inability and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the overwhelming burden of debt and the subjugation of men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-hammi wal-hazan, wa a'udhu bika min al-'ajzi wal-kasal, wa a'udhu bika min al-jubni wal-buhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.
When to Read
This powerful dua is excellent to recite after completing your obligatory prayers. While the hadith mentions the Prophet ﷺ reciting it in various situations, making it a regular part of your post-prayer supplications is a beautiful way to seek Allah's refuge from many worldly and spiritual afflictions that can hinder our ability to fulfill our commitments, including oaths and vows. You can make this a habit after every Fard prayer.
How to Read
Recite this dua sincerely with full conviction in Allah's power to protect and assist you. Turn to the Qiblah, raise your hands (as is the practice during supplication after prayer), and make this dua. Remember that dua is a conversation with Allah; speak to Him with humility and hope, acknowledging your dependence on Him.
Virtues & Benefits
This comprehensive dua covers seeking refuge from many forms of hardship and negative states. By reciting it, you are asking Allah to protect you from: - Loss of blessings and well-being. - Sudden punishments. - His anger and displeasure. - Mental and emotional distress (worry and grief). - Physical and spiritual weakness (inability and laziness). - Character flaws (cowardice and stinginess). - Financial hardship and being overpowered by others. Seeking refuge from these issues indirectly helps in fulfilling oaths and vows, as these afflictions can weaken our resolve and capacity to keep our promises to Allah or others.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge with these words: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-hammi wal-hazan, wa a'udhu bika min al-'ajzi wal-kasal, wa a'udhu bika min al-jubni wal-buhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demise of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, from inability and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the overwhelming burden of debt and the subjugation of men). This was narrated by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) and recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 4, Hadith 6306.
