اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّى أَسْأَلُكَ حُسْنَ الْخَاتِمَةِ
O Allah, I ask You for a beautiful end.
Allahumma inni as'aluka husnal khātimah
When to Read
This is a profound dua to be recited regularly, especially after prayers. Life's end is uncertain, and consciously seeking Allah's mercy in our final moments is a sign of a believer's deep reliance on Him. It's a practice that reminds us to keep our ultimate destination in focus, regardless of the daily struggles we face.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, reflecting on its meaning. Imagine yourself in your final moments, asking Allah for His grace. Raising your hands, as is customary in supplication, can enhance the feeling of earnestness. It's a personal plea, a whisper to your Creator when you most need His acceptance.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking a 'husnal khātimah' (a beautiful end) is about departing this world in a state of faith and righteousness, with Allah pleased with you. While the specific rewards for this exact wording aren't detailed in the texts, the concept of striving for a good end is central to a Muslim's life. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us many duas for various situations, and asking for a good end encompasses seeking forgiveness, being steadfast in faith until the very last breath, and dying with the remembrance of Allah on our tongues.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from Mu'adh ibn Jabal that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took his hand and said: 'O Mu'adh, by Allah, I love you, and I advise you, O Mu'adh, do not miss saying after every prayer: Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatika (O Allah, help me to remember You, to give thanks to You, and to worship You in the best manner).' (The dua for a good end is not in this specific hadith, but the spirit of seeking help from Allah for all aspects of our life, including our passing, is implied. Many scholars have also transmitted the specific dua for husnal khātimah based on other narrations and the general principle of asking Allah for good.) Another relevant hadith is: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When Allah intends to take the soul of a servant in goodness, He causes him to work in obedience to Him.' [Narrated by Ahmad, graded Sahih by Albani]. This shows that a good end is often preceded by good deeds.
