Dua for the Meal to Be a Source of Light in the Hereafter

After Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5446

All praise is due to Allah, [praiseworthy] praise abundantly, good and blessed, [praiseworthy] praise that is not ended, nor bid farewell, nor dispensed with, O our Lord.

Al-hamdu lillahi hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan fihi ghaira makfiyyin wa la muwadda'in wa la mustaghnan 'anhu Rabbuna.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited after finishing a meal. It's a moment of gratitude and a chance to transform a worldly act into something that benefits us in the hereafter.

How to Read

Recite this with sincerity and a heartfelt sense of appreciation for the sustenance Allah has provided. Feel the words as you speak them, acknowledging that every blessing comes from Him and that we are always in need of His grace.

Virtues & Benefits

This specific dua, while not explicitly stating it will be 'light in the hereafter,' is a comprehensive expression of gratitude. When we are truly thankful for Allah's blessings, especially something as fundamental as food, this gratitude elevates our actions. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that thanking Allah after a meal is a way of acknowledging His bounty. Such sincere thankfulness, coupled with the intention that this sustenance aids us in our worship and strengthens us for good deeds, can indeed become a source of light and reward in the hereafter. The Prophet ﷺ also said: 'Whoever eats something and says: *Alhamdulillah alladhi at'amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghairi hawlin minni wa la quwwah*, his past sins will be forgiven.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5084, Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3458). While this is a different dua, it highlights how thanking Allah for food carries immense reward.

Source & Authentication

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Al-Harith: We were with the Prophet ﷺ and he ate a meal. When he finished, he said: 'Al-hamdu lillahi hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan fihi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la muwadda'in wa la mustaghnan 'anhu Rabbuna.' (All praise is due to Allah, [praiseworthy] praise abundantly, good and blessed, [praiseworthy] praise that is not ended, nor bid farewell, nor dispensed with, O our Lord.) Then the Prophet ﷺ said: 'There are more than seventy thousand angels, each one of them asking Allah to grant him permission to supplicate for the one who eats this meal.'
