Dua for the Meal to Be a Cure and Protection

After Eating
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3918

O Allah, by You we enter the morning and by You we enter the evening, by You we live, and by You we die, and to You is the resurrection. And when any one of you eats food, let him say: 'O Allah, bless it for us and give us more than it.' And when he is given milk to drink, let him say: 'O Allah, bless it for us and increase us in it.' For nothing takes the place of food and drink except milk.

Allahumma bika asbahna wa bika amsayna, wa bika nahya, wa bika namootu, wa ilaykan-nushoor. Wa idha akala ahadukum ta'aman falyuqul: Allahumma barik lana feehi, warzuqna khayran minhu. Wa idha suqiya labanan falyuqul: Allahumma barik lana feehi, wa zidna minhu. Wa laysa shay'un yujzi'u min at-ta'ami wash-sharabi illa al-laban.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua seeks Allah's blessing in the food we have eaten, asking for it to be a source of nourishment and goodness. It also asks for more sustenance, showing gratitude and trust in Allah's provision. The inclusion of 'warzuqna khayran minhu' (and give us more than it) implies seeking protection from any harm the food might contain and asking for an even better provision in the future, whether in this world or the next. The mention of milk highlights its unique importance as a provision from Allah.
