After Eating
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5105

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

Praise is to Allah Who has fed me this food and provided it to me without any strength or power from my side.

*Alhamdulillah alladhi at'amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin*

When to Read

This dua is recited after finishing a meal. It acknowledges that the ability to eat and the sustenance itself are from Allah, not from our own efforts. Sometimes, even after eating, a sense of hunger might linger, or one might feel a desire for more. Reciting this dua with sincerity helps to feel content with what Allah has provided, recognizing it as sufficient and a blessing that alleviates the feeling of wanting more or still feeling hungry.

How to Read

Recite this dua immediately after finishing your meal. Say it with a sense of gratitude and humility, acknowledging that the food and the ability to digest it are blessings from Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala). It's not just about the words, but the feeling of thankfulness in your heart that truly counts. Imagine the nourishment entering your body as a gift, and be content with that gift.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua encompasses several profound benefits. Firstly, it cultivates deep gratitude (shukr) towards Allah for the sustenance provided, reminding us that every blessing, big or small, is from Him. Secondly, it fosters contentment (qana'ah), helping us to feel satisfied with what we have received, thus repelling feelings of excessive desire or lingering hunger. By attributing the provision to Allah's power and not our own, it also reinforces Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and humility. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us this dua to help us feel fulfilled not just physically, but spiritually, with the blessings Allah bestows.

Source & Authentication

The narration from Sunan Abi Dawud states: ‘Abdullah ibn Ghannam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever says this dua after finishing his meal: *Alhamdulillah alladhi at'amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin* (Praise is to Allah Who has fed me this food and provided it to me without any strength or power from my side), all of his previous sins will be forgiven." Sunan At-Tirmidhi narrates a similar hadith: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever eats food and then says: *Alhamdulillah alladhi at'amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin* (Praise is to Allah Who has fed me this food and provided it to me without any strength or power from my side), his minor sins will be forgiven."
