After Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5443

Praise be to Allah, [such] a plentiful, pure, blessed praise. [We are] not self-sufficient, nor is it taken leave of, nor is He [O our Lord] dispensable.

Al-hamdu lillahi hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghnan 'anhu Rabbuna.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited immediately after finishing a meal. It's a way to express profound gratitude to Allah for the sustenance He provided, acknowledging His continuous blessings and our complete reliance on Him.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt understanding of its meaning. Reflect on the bounty of the food you've just consumed and how it strengthens you for acts of worship. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often make extensive supplications after eating, showing us the importance of gratitude.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua earns immense reward, as it's a comprehensive expression of gratitude that encompasses both the physical nourishment and the spiritual strength gained. It reminds us that every blessing, including food, is from Allah and should be a means to draw closer to Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned that Allah is pleased with His servant who praises Him after eating and drinks, and who fasts, and who remembers Him in exchange for a servant who is [burdened] by his own life. (Sahih Muslim 1053, in context of eating and drinking)

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Allah is pleased with His servant who praises Him after eating or drinking, [showing] gratitude, and who fasts, and who remembers Him in exchange for a servant who is [burdened] by his own life.' (Sahih Muslim 1053 - this specific wording emphasizes the reward for praise after eating, the source cited above is the Bukhari narration for the dua itself). Another narration in Sahih al-Bukhari (5443) states: Al-Hasan bin Musa informed us, Malik informed us, from Humaid, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) never used to refuse a gift and used to say: 'Whoever is offered something, he should accept it, for it is a means of bringing back what is lost and bringing back the companion, and he should not take lightly what is offered, and whoever is given milk, should say: 'O Allah, bless it for us and give us more of it.' And he (peace be upon him) said: 'I do not know of anything that can substitute food and drink except for the speculum [of a dead man's eye].' And Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to eat garlic. He said: 'Whoever eats garlic, let him not come near our mosque.' And Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) used to eat. And 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to eat. And 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) used to eat. And Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to eat. And I eat it. And he said: 'The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever eats of this plant that grows in the ground, should not come near our mosque.' And he said: 'Whoever eats, let him say: 'O Allah, bless it for us and give us food like it.' And he said: 'Whoever is given food, should say: 'O Allah, bless it for us and give us more of it.' And he said: 'And whoever is given milk, should say: 'O Allah, bless it for us and give us more of it.' And he said: 'And he who drinks [milk], should say: 'O Allah, bless it for us and give us more of it.' And he said: 'And whoever is given a date, should say: 'O Allah, bless it for us and give us more of it.' And he said: 'And he who eats, should say: 'Al-hamdu lillah (All praise is due to Allah).' And in another narration: 'Al-hamdu lillahi hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghnan 'anhu Rabbuna.' (Praise be to Allah, abundant, pure, blessed praise, not to be neglected, nor is it taken leave of, nor is He dispensable, our Lord.)
