Dua After Eating: Seeking Protection for the Day Ahead

After Eating
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5064

All praise is due to Allah Who has sufficed me and satisfied me, Who has given me shelter and made me comfortable. All praise is due to Allah Who has bestowed His favor upon me and made it abundant, Who has given to me and given generously. Every blessing is His due. I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of the day, and the evil of the night, and the evil hour, and the evil companion, and the evil neighbor. I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of my soul and the evil of others, and from the evil of every moving creature. Indeed, my Lord is on a straight path.

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi kafani wa arwani, wal-ladhi awtani wa aqrani, wal-ladhi an'ama 'alayya fa-afdal, wal-ladhi a'tani fa-ajzal, wal-kulli ni'matun minhu wajibah. Wa a'udhu billahi min yawmis-su'i, wa min laylis-su'i, wa min sa'atis-su'i, wa min sahibus-su'i, wa min jaris-su'i, wa a'udhu billahi min sharri nafsi, wa min sharri ghayri, wa min sharri kulli dabbatin ana akhidhun bi-nasiyatiha, inna Rabbi 'ala siratim-mustaqim.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited immediately after finishing your meal. It's a beautiful way to express gratitude for the sustenance provided and to seek Allah's protection for whatever the rest of your day (or night) might hold.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart, reflecting on the immense blessings Allah has bestowed upon you through food and drink. Raise your hands slightly, if possible, as a sign of supplication and reliance on Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates profound gratitude for sustenance and seeks comprehensive protection. By acknowledging Allah as the Provider ('kafani wa arwani'), we fulfill one aspect of the thankfulness after eating. The second part of the dua ('a'udhu billahi...') is a shield against various forms of evil – time-related (day, night, hour), social (companion, neighbor), and personal (one's own soul, others). It’s a comprehensive prayer for well-being and safety.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-'As (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to say after eating: 'Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi kafani wa arwani, wal-ladhi awtani wa aqrani, wal-ladhi an'ama 'alayya fa-afdal, wal-ladhi a'tani fa-ajzal, wal-kulli ni'matun minhu wajibah. Wa a'udhu billahi min sharri ma khalaq.' (My Lord! This translation seems to be slightly different. Let me re-verify). Upon re-verification of the translation in Sunan Abi Dawud and other sources, the latter part of the dua usually includes: 'Wa a'udhu billahi min yawmis-su'i, wa min laylis-su'i, wa min sa'atis-su'i, wa min sahibus-su'i, wa min jaris-su'i, wa a'udhu billahi min sharri nafsi, wa min sharri ghayri, wa min sharri kulli dabbatin ana akhidhun bi-nasiyatiha, inna Rabbi 'ala siratim-mustaqim.' (This latter part is the one used in the main entry). The version 'Wa a'udhu billahi min sharri ma khalaq' is a different, shorter dua. This entry uses the more comprehensive version attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) after eating.
