Dua After Eating: Seeking Forgiveness for Sins

After Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5443

Praise be to Allah, abundant, good, and blessed praise. Praise that is never insufficient, never bid farewell to, and without which our Lord is never self-sufficient.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited immediately after finishing a meal. It's a moment when we are physically nourished, and it's the perfect time to turn our hearts to Allah, acknowledging His bounty and seeking His forgiveness.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity after you have finished eating and are about to get up from your meal. It’s a direct expression of gratitude and a humble request for continued favor from Allah. Imagine saying it while looking at the remnants of the meal, connecting the physical sustenance with spiritual gratitude.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is a profound way to express gratitude for the food Allah has provided. The repetition of 'hamdan' (praise) and the descriptive adjectives emphasize the depth of this thankfulness. The phrase 'ghaira makfiyyin' (never insufficient) highlights that our praise, no matter how extensive, can never fully encompass Allah's blessings. By making this dua, we acknowledge our reliance on Him and implicitly ask for His continued blessings and forgiveness for any shortcomings in our gratitude.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, whenever he finished his meal, would say:
