Dua After Eating: Seeking Divine Acceptance and Increased Provision

After Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5446

Praise be to Allah, [praise] in abundance, good and blessed. O our Lord, [this provision] cannot be dispensed with, nor can it be done without, nor can one do without needing it.

Alhamdulillah hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghna 'anhu Rabbana.

When to Read

Recite this dua immediately after finishing your meal. It's a beautiful way to transition from the physical act of eating to expressing gratitude to Allah, acknowledging that the sustenance provided is a blessing we continuously need and can never truly be independent of.

How to Read

This is a comprehensive expression of gratitude. Say it with sincerity, reflecting on the blessings Allah has bestowed upon you through the food you've eaten. It's a moment to feel connected to the provision of your Lord. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this specific wording, so uttering it as taught shows adherence to the Sunnah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses several profound meanings. It acknowledges Allah as the sole provider, thanking Him for sustenance that is both plentiful and pure. It recognizes our inherent need for His blessings, that we can never be self-sufficient. By reciting this, you are actively practicing gratitude (Shukr), a quality beloved by Allah, and seeking His continued favor and provision. It also serves as a reminder of the ephemeral nature of worldly provisions and the eternal reliance we have on our Creator.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) if he was raised to (eat) his food, he would say: 'Alhamdulillah hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghna 'anhu Rabbana.' (Praise be to Allah, [praise] in abundance, good and blessed. O our Lord, [this provision] cannot be dispensed with, nor can it be done without, nor can one do without needing it.)
