All praise is due to Allah, [praise] abundant, pure, and blessed, and not to be superseded or bid farewell to, nor is one independent of Him, our Lord.
Al-hamdulillah hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghna 'anhu Rabbana.
When to Read
This beautiful dua is recited immediately after finishing a meal, especially when the food itself was earned through halal means. It's a moment to pause and express gratitude for the sustenance Allah has provided.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and heartfelt appreciation. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this specific wording, so aiming for accuracy in pronunciation is beneficial. It's a personal reflection, so say it with earnestness after you've finished your meal, perhaps before rising from your seat.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a profound expression of gratitude that goes beyond a simple 'Alhamdulillah'. It acknowledges that Allah's blessings are constant and essential, and that we can never truly repay His favors. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Indeed, Allah is pleased with His slave who praises Him after eating and after drinking.' (Sahih Muslim 2734). By reciting this, we are acknowledging the halal nature of our earnings and the purity of the sustenance provided, seeking Allah's pleasure and acknowledging His continuous provision.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When the Prophet ﷺ ate something, he would say: "Al-hamdulillah alladhi at'amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghairi hawlin minni wa la quwwah." (All praise is due to Allah Who fed me this and provided it for me without any power on my part nor strength). And when he drank, he would say: "Al-hamdulillah alladhi saqani." (All praise is due to Allah Who gave me to drink). And when he finished from his food, he would say: "Al-hamdulillah alladhi at'amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghairi hawlin minni wa la quwwah." (All praise is due to Allah Who fed me this and provided it for me without any power on my part nor strength). And when he finished from his drink, he would say: "Al-hamdulillah." When the Prophet ﷺ finished his meal, he would say: "Al-hamdulillah alladhi kafani wa arwani, ghaira makfiyyin wa la makfiyyin." (Praise be to Allah Who sufficed me and quenched my thirst, not enough for the servant nor is the servant able to suffice Him). Narrated by Abu Umamah. (Sunan Abi Dawud 3850). However, the specific phrasing provided in the main entry, 'Al-hamdulillah hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghna 'anhu Rabbana,' is also narrated by Al-Bukhari (5418) as the Prophet's ﷺ supplication after a meal, emphasizing ongoing reliance and His Lordship.
