After Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5409

Praise be to Allah, much praise, pure and blessed. It is not enough, nor is it taken leave of, nor is it unnecessary, our Lord.

Al-hamdulillah hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghnan 'anhu Rabbuna.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua encapsulates a deep sense of gratitude for Allah's provision. It acknowledges that even the most plentiful blessings are never truly 'enough' in terms of deserving Allah's praise, nor can we ever dispense with His continuous grace. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this specific wording, indicating its importance in expressing a complete and humble thankfulness, recognizing that our sustenance is entirely from Him and we are always in need of His continued favor.

Narrated Abu Umamah: The Prophet (ﷺ) was asked: 'What is the best way to thank Allah?' He said: 'When you eat something and say: *Al-hamdulillah alladhee hamdahu 'abdun shay'an min-ni'matihi* (Praise be to Allah Who favored His slave with a thing from His bounty), until the end of the Hadith. So 'Abdullah bin Ghannam said: 'And we said: O Allah's Messenger! What is the best Dua?' He said: 'The best Dua is the Dua of the Day of Arafat, and the best thing that I and the Prophets before me said is: *Subhana kallahumma wa bihamdika, la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atoobu ilayk* (Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Him, there is no god but You; I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance).' And when a servant of Allah says this, it is written on a parchment and not sealed until the Day of Resurrection. (This is the narration of Al-Tirmidhi, and it is Hasan). But Abu Dawood's narration states: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The best Dua is the Dua on the Day of Arafat, and the best statement is what I and the Prophets before me said.' He mentioned the wording as: *'Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdika, la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atoobu ilayk.'* (Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Him, there is no god but You; I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance). He then said: 'And the best of what the servants and the prophets said on that day is: *'Al-hamdulillah alladhee at'amanī hādhā wa razaqanīhi min ghairi hawlin minnī wa la quwwatin.'* (Praise be to Allah Who fed me this and provided it for me without any effort on my part, nor any power). And in another narration, it is: *'Al-hamdulillah alladhee kafaanee wa awfaa'nee.'* (Praise be to Allah Who sufficed me and gave me more than enough). And in Muslim's narration: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'When Allah bestows His favour upon any servant, he should say: *Al-hamdulillah alladhee bi ni'matihi tatimmus-salihaat* (Praise be to Allah, by Whose grace good deeds are completed). And when He withholds (His favour), he should say: *Al-hamdulillah 'ala kulli halin* (Praise be to Allah in all circumstances).'. And in Muslim's narration: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'When Allah gives a person food, he should say: *'Al-hamdulillah alladhee at'amanī hādhā wa razaqanīhi min ghairi hawlin minnī wa la quwwatin.'* (Praise be to Allah Who fed me this and provided it for me without any effort on my part, nor any power). And when He clothes a person, he should say: *'Al-hamdulillah alladhee kasānee hādhā ar-rizaqa wa razaqanīhi min ghairi hawlin minnī wa la quwwatin.'* (Praise be to Allah Who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any effort on my part, nor any power).
