All praise is due to Allah, [praise] abundant, pure, and blessed. [We are] not self-sufficient, nor is it to be taken leave of, nor is it possible to dispense with it, our Lord.
Alḥamdulillāhi ḥamdan kathīran ṭayyiban mubārakan fīhi, ghayra makfiyyin wa lā mawaddaʿin wa lā mustaghnan ʿanhu rabbunā.
When to Read
This dua is recited immediately after finishing a meal. It's a beautiful expression of gratitude for the food Allah has provided and a recognition that without His continued grace, we would be unable to sustain ourselves.
How to Read
Recite this with sincerity and a heart full of gratitude. The phrasing emphasizes Allah's sufficiency and the perpetual need we have for His blessings, even after receiving sustenance. It's about acknowledging that the nourishment we receive is a trust, and we should seek Allah's help to use it in ways that please Him.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his companions, highlights the immense importance of acknowledging Allah's blessings. It's not just about saying 'thank you' for the food itself, but recognizing that Allah is the ultimate source of all provision and that His bounty is continuous and essential for our existence. By reciting this, we are fulfilling a part of the 'rights' of the sustenance – which includes acknowledging the Giver and seeking His help to remain grateful and to use the strength gained from the food in His obedience.
