Dua After Eating: Asking for Sustenance and Gratitude

After Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5446

Praise be to Allah, [such] abundant, pure, and blessed praise, [praise that is] not insufficient, nor [is it the] last of our praise, nor [is it] unnecessary for our Lord.

Alhamdulillah hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin wa laa mudawwa'in wa la mustaghna 'anhu Rabbuna.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited immediately after finishing a meal. It's a moment of profound gratitude, acknowledging that Allah is the source of all provision and that our praise, though heartfelt, is ultimately dependent on His grace. Think about the warmth of the food, the nourishment it provides, and the comfort of being satiated. This dua captures that feeling perfectly.

How to Read

Recite this with sincerity and a heart full of gratitude. Feel the words as you speak them, acknowledging that Allah's blessings are indeed more than we can ever fully repay or exhaust. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this specific phrasing, so focus on uttering each word clearly and with intention. It's a beautiful way to end a meal, turning a simple act into an act of worship.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua signifies deep gratitude, going beyond a simple 'Alhamdulillah'. It acknowledges the continuous and abundant nature of Allah's blessings and our perpetual need for Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned that when a person says this after eating, seventy thousand angels send blessings upon them until the morning (Sunan Ibn Majah 3280, graded Hasan by some scholars). It turns a mundane act into an opportunity for immense reward and divine remembrance.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abu Umamah: The Prophet (ﷺ) if he was raised to his knees after (eating) food, he would say: 'Alhamdulillah hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin wa laa mudawwa'in wa la mustaghna 'anhu Rabbuna.' (Praise be to Allah, [such] abundant, pure, and blessed praise, [praise that is] not insufficient, nor [is it the] last of our praise, nor [is it] unnecessary for our Lord.) and he would say: 'Allah has rewarded ten like it.'
