Dua After Eating and Drinking: Seeking Protection and Blessings

After Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5409

All praise is due to Allah, [praise] in abundance, good and blessed, without being sufficient, nor being bid farewell, nor being in need of Him, our Lord.

Alhamdulillah hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin, wa la mawadda'in, wa la mustaghna 'anhu Rabbana.

When to Read

This dua is recited after finishing any meal or drink. It's a beautiful way to express gratitude for the sustenance Allah has provided and to acknowledge His continuous blessings upon us.

How to Read

Say this dua with sincerity and a heart full of gratitude after you have finished eating or drinking. Recognize that the ability to eat, drink, and be satisfied is a gift from Allah alone. The phrase 'ghaira makfiyyin' implies that this praise is not enough to fulfill Allah's due, 'wa la mawadda' means it's not something that will be cut off or forgotten, and 'wa la mustaghna 'anhu Rabbana' means we can never be self-sufficient and are always in need of Him.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua after a meal is a profound act of shukr (gratitude). It acknowledges that all sustenance comes from Allah and that our praise, though abundant, is still insufficient for His perfect blessings. It reminds us of our constant dependence on Him and earns His pleasure. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to express a deeper level of thankfulness beyond simply saying 'Alhamdulillah'.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Umamah: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "When any of you finishes his food, he should say: 'Alhamdulillahillazi hamidani hathaa ta'aame wa razaqanihi bi la hawlin minni wa la quwwatin' (All praise is due to Allah Who fed me this food and provided it for me without any strength from myself nor any power). And when he finishes the milk, he should say: 'Alhamdulillahillazi arwaani wa ja'ala lahu makhrajan' (All praise is due to Allah Who quenched my thirst and made an exit for it). And the Prophet (ﷺ) taught Abu Umamah a phrase, and I did not think that there was anything better than it. He said: 'Say: Alhamdulillahillahi hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin, wa la mawadda'in, wa la mustaghna 'anhu Rabbana' (All praise is due to Allah, [praise] in abundance, good and blessed, without being sufficient, nor being bid farewell, nor being in need of Him, our Lord)." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306 also contains a similar narration, with variations in phrasing, emphasizing gratitude. The specific phrasing provided in the main entry is from Sahih al-Bukhari 5409).
