After Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5446

Praise be to Allah, [such] praise that is abundant, pure, and blessed. [We praise Him] in a way that He is not displeased, nor is it a farewell, and [He is] indispensable, our Lord.

Al-hamdulillah hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghayra makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghnan 'anhu Rabbana.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited immediately after finishing a meal. It's an expression of deep gratitude for the sustenance Allah has provided, acknowledging His boundless blessings.

How to Read

Recite this dua after you have finished eating and drinking. It's a moment to pause, reflect, and acknowledge the grace of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would say this, often with a tone of profound thankfulness.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a complete acknowledgment of Allah's favors. The phrase 'ghayra makfiyyin' suggests that this praise is not sufficient to repay His favors, 'wa la mawadda' means that this is not a final farewell to His blessings, and 'wa la mustaghnan 'anhu' signifies that we can never be independent of Him. It fosters humility and continuous reliance on Allah, reminding us that every meal is a gift and we remain in need of His continuous provision.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Umamah: When the table was set before the Prophet (ﷺ), he used to say: 'Allahumma kun lana ta'ama wa Rizaqan fana'mina alayna'. And when he finished the meal, he used to say: 'Al-hamdu lillahi hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghayra makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghnan 'anhu Rabbana.' (O Allah, be for us food and sustenance, so bestow it upon us plentifully. And when he finished the meal, he used to say: Praise be to Allah, [such] praise that is abundant, pure, and blessed. [We praise Him] in a way that He is not displeased, nor is it a farewell, and [He is] indispensable, our Lord.)
