Seeking Allah's Protection from Internal Betrayal and Treachery

For the Ummah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the decline of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that displeases You. I seek refuge in You from being crushed, I seek refuge in You from falling from a height, I seek refuge in You from drowning, burning, and extreme old age. I seek refuge in You from being assailed by Satan at the time of death. I seek refuge in You from dying in Your path while turning away (in defeat), and I seek refuge in You from dying from a poisonous sting.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Wa a'udhu bika minal-hadm, wa a'udhu bika minat-taraddi, wa a'udhu bika minal-gharaqi, wal-haraqi, wal-harami. Wa a'udhu bika an yatakhabbaṭani ash-shayṭanu 'indal-mawt. Wa a'udhu bika an amuta fi sabilika mudbiran, wa a'udhu bika an amuta ladighan.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is perfect for reciting during the times when one feels vulnerable to internal discord, mistrust, or when witnessing signs of disunity within the community. Reciting it after each prayer (Salat) is a powerful habit, as well as at the beginning of the day to seek Allah's protection throughout.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a firm belief in Allah's power to protect. Raise your hands as you do when making dua, facing the Qiblah if possible. Ensure you pronounce the Arabic words clearly and understand the meaning of each phrase you utter. Reflect on the profound protection you are seeking from various forms of destruction and spiritual attack, including the insidious nature of betrayal and treachery.

Virtues & Benefits

While this specific hadith doesn't directly mention 'internal betrayal,' its comprehensive scope of seeking refuge from various calamities and negative influences is highly relevant. By seeking refuge from 'all that displeases You' (jami'i sakhatik) and the 'assault of Satan at the time of death,' we are inherently seeking protection from the spiritual weaknesses that can lead to betrayal and treachery. Internal strife often stems from desires, misunderstandings, and weaknesses that can be exacerbated by Shaytan. Protecting ourselves from these general harms through this dua helps to build internal resilience against such eventualities, fostering unity and trust within the Ummah.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to seek refuge (in Allah) from the severity of suffering, the lowest of hardship, the worst of judgment, and the evil of an enemy, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Wa a'udhu bika min al-hadmi, wa a'udhu bika min at-taraddi, wa a'udhu bika min al-gharaqi, wal-haraqi, wal-harami. Wa a'udhu bika an yatakhabbaṭani ash-shayṭanu 'indal-mawt. Wa a'udhu bika an amuta fi sabilika mudbiran, wa a'udhu bika an amuta ladighan.' (Sahih Muslim 2708)
