Dua for the Ummah: Protection from Digital Harms and Misinformation

For the Ummah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2708

O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that displeases You. O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the hardship of affliction, the attainment of misery, the evil of destiny, and the rejoicing of enemies. O Allah, Controller of the hearts, turn our hearts to Your obedience.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is particularly relevant today as we navigate the complexities of social media and the constant influx of information. Recite it in the morning after Fajr prayer, and in the evening after Maghrib prayer, as the Prophet ﷺ taught us to seek refuge in Allah during these times. It's also a powerful supplication to make when feeling overwhelmed by digital distractions, misinformation, or when we see the Ummah facing trials through these platforms.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart, raising your hands as you begin. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, recognizing Allah's power over all things, including the challenges presented by the digital age. Seek refuge in His perfect care and ask Him to guide our hearts and minds towards what is beneficial and righteous, shielding us from the harms that can spread through screens and algorithms.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encapsulates seeking refuge from a spectrum of potential harms that can affect individuals and the Ummah as a whole. By asking Allah to protect us from the 'cessation of Your blessings' and 'reversal of Your well-being,' we acknowledge our dependence on Him for all good. The plea against 'hardship of affliction,' 'misery,' 'evil of destiny,' and 'rejoicing of enemies' covers profound spiritual and temporal difficulties. In the context of social media, this can translate to protection from the loss of faith due to misleading content, the despair caused by digital negativity, the misguided paths presented by misinformation, and the division sown amongst Muslims by digital adversaries. The final part, asking Allah to 'turn our hearts to Your obedience,' is crucial for maintaining spiritual focus amidst digital distractions.

Humaid b. 'Abd al-Rahman reported that Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) most frequently used to say when he woke up in the morning: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan. (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and accepted deeds). And when he woke up in the evening, he would say the same. And when he went to bed, he would say: O Allah, protect me from hell-fire and from the punishment of the grave. And he used to say: 'Allahumma inna na'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inna na'udhu bika min jahdil-bala', wa darakish-shaqa', wa su'il-qada', wa shamatatil-a'da'. Allahumma musarrifal-qulub, sarraf qulubana ila ta'atik.' (O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that displeases You. O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the hardship of affliction, the attainment of misery, the evil of destiny, and the rejoicing of enemies. O Allah, Controller of the hearts, turn our hearts to Your obedience.)
