For the Ummah
Hasan HadithSunan An-Nasa'i 1309

O Allah, I ask You by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over creation. Keep me alive as long as You know that life is better for me, and cause me to die when You know that death is better for me. I ask You for fear of You in private and in public, and I ask You for the word of truth in times of contentment and anger. I ask You for moderation in poverty and wealth, and I ask You for a bounty that will never cease. I ask You for a coolness of the eye that will never be cut off. I ask You for contentment after Your decree, and I ask You for a pleasant life after death, and I ask You for the delight of looking at Your Face, and longing to meet You, without hardship that causes harm or trials that lead astray. O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith, and make us guides who are guided.

Allahumma inni as'aluka bi'ilmika al-ghaiba wa qudratika 'ala al-khalqi, ahsini ma 'alimta al-hayata khayran li, wa tawaffani idha 'alimta al-wafata khayran li. Wa as'aluka khashyataka fi al-ghaibi wash-shahadati, wa as'aluka kalimat al-haqqi fi ar-rida wal-ghadabi, wa as'aluka al-qasda fi al-faqri wal-ghina, wa as'aluka na'iman la yanfadu, wa as'aluka qurrata 'ainin la tanqati', wa as'aluka ar-rida ba'da al-qada'i, wa as'aluka barda al-'ayshi ba'da al-mauti, wa as'aluka ladhdhat an-nadgari ila wajhik, wash-shawqa ila liqa'ik, fi ghairi darra'a mudirratin, wa la fitnatin mudillatin. Allahumma zayyinna bizīnati al-īmāni, waj'alna hudatan muhtadīn.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua, encompassing a plea for protection, guidance, and contentment, is particularly relevant during times of crisis when the vulnerable, including orphans and widows, are most at risk. Recite it when facing widespread hardship, societal upheaval, or when you are personally moved to pray for the well-being of the wider Muslim community.

How to Read

This supplication is best recited with sincerity and a humble heart, ideally after the obligatory prayers or during personal reflection. Raising your hands is permissible, as is looking towards the sky. Focus on the meaning of each phrase and truly feel the earnestness of your request to Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies a profound request for Allah's comprehensive care, covering life, death, inner strength (fear of Allah), truthfulness, balanced living, and ultimate reward. By asking for these qualities, we align ourselves with what is pleasing to Allah, which indirectly benefits the entire community, including its most vulnerable members. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that the best of people are those who are most beneficial to others (Sahih al-Bukhari 6120), and praying for the well-being of orphans and widows, even indirectly through such comprehensive supplications, is a manifestation of this principle.

Source & Authentication

The full context of this hadith is the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teaching his companions comprehensive supplications. The specific wording of this dua is a testament to its encompassing nature, asking Allah for guidance and protection in all aspects of life and for the hereafter. It reflects the Prophet's ﷺ deep concern for the spiritual and worldly well-being of the believers.
