Dua for the Courage and Integrity of the Ummah in Speaking Truth to Power

For the Ummah
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3251

O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all matters, and determination in righteousness. I ask You for the gratitude of Your favours, and excellence in worshipping You. I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. And I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know, and I ask You for the good of what You know. And I seek Your forgiveness for what You know. Indeed, You are the Knower of the unseen.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-thabat fil-amr, wal-'azeemata 'alar-rushd, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa husna 'ibadatik, wa as'aluka qalbansaleem, wa lisanaan sadiq, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa as'aluka min khairi ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka mimma ta'lam, innaka anta 'allamul-ghuyoob.

When to Read

This is a profound dua that can be recited at any time, but it's particularly poignant when facing situations that test one's resolve, when witnessing injustice, or when feeling the need to speak up for what is right but fearing the consequences. It's fitting to make this supplication during the blessed times, such as the last third of the night or between the Adhan and Iqamah, asking Allah to grant the Ummah the strength and clarity to stand firm and speak truth, even when it's difficult.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincerity and focus, recognizing that true courage and integrity stem from Allah (SWT). Begin by praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Recite the Arabic text clearly, understanding its meaning. Reflect on each request, envisioning the Ummah embodying these qualities. This is a personal and communal plea; you can make it individually or as a group, with the intention of seeking Allah's help for the entire Muslim community.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encompasses seeking Allah's aid for crucial qualities needed by the Ummah: steadfastness ('thabat') in upholding truth and justice, determination ('azimah') to pursue righteousness, gratitude ('shukr') for blessings, and excellence in worship ('husn 'ibadah'). It also asks for a pure heart ('qalb saleem') and a truthful tongue ('lisan sadiq') – the very tools needed to speak truth to power with integrity. By seeking refuge from evil and asking for all good, and acknowledging Allah's omniscience, we align ourselves with His will, seeking His protection and guidance for the collective strength of the Ummah.

Source & Authentication

The narration is from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to supplicate: 'O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency.' And he also used to supplicate: 'O Allah, I ask You for the steadfastness in the command, and the resolve to follow what is right, and I ask You for the gratitude for Your blessings, and excellence in Your worship. And I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. And I ask You of the goodness of all that You know, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of all that You know. And I seek Your forgiveness for what You know.' And he said: 'Indeed, You are the Knower of the unseen.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3251, graded Hasan by Al-Albani). The portion relevant to this dua is the latter part concerning steadfastness, resolve, a sound heart, and a truthful tongue, which are essential for speaking truth to power.
