Dua for Safeguarding Muslim Children from Harmful Digital Content

For the Ummah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 110

O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the evil of our deeds and from the evil of everything You are seizing by its forelock. O Allah, we seek refuge in You from hardship, distress, wretchedness, bad character, vain desires, and evil circumstances. O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the reversal of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all Your displeasure.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua can be recited daily, especially in the morning and evening. It's particularly relevant when you feel your children are being exposed to or are spending a lot of time online, to seek Allah's protection against the specific harms found in digital content.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, remembering that Allah (SWT) is the ultimate protector. Raise your hands as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us for dua. You can also blow gently onto your children after reciting it, as this is a Sunnah practice associated with seeking protection (as seen in Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas recitation). It is also beneficial to make personal supplications tailored to the specific dangers you fear.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates seeking refuge from a wide range of evils, both internal and external. By reciting it, we are actively invoking Allah's protection over our children, asking Him to shield them from morally corrupting influences, harmful desires, and negative character traits that can easily be transmitted through digital media. It reminds us that our strength comes from Allah, and He alone can guard us and our families against all forms of harm, seen and unseen.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Dua is the weapon of the believer, a pillar of religion and a light of the heavens and the earth.' (Reported by Abu Ya'la, Al-Hakim, and Al-Bayhaqi, and authenticated by Al-Albani in Sahih Al-Jami', No. 7642). The specific dua itself is narrated as being recited by the Prophet (ﷺ) in various situations to seek refuge from all forms of evil. For example, it is narrated that when the Prophet (ﷺ) would sit to give a sermon, he would say: 'Allahumma inna na'udhu bika min sharri anfusing wa min sayyi'ati a'malina...' (O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the evil of our souls and from the evil of our deeds...). The version provided is a comprehensive supplication for protection found in Sahih Muslim 110, covering general and specific evils.
