Dua for Ease in Difficult Departures & Protection of the Deceased Ummah

For the Ummah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him. Honor his reception, make his entrance wide, and cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This is the supplication the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught for when a person passes away. It can be recited individually or collectively when offering funeral prayers and making dua for the deceased, as well as at other times to remember the Ummah and pray for their ease in departing this world and for their protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and heartfelt earnestness, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. It is meant to be a profound supplication for the mercy and forgiveness of Allah for the departed soul, and by extension, for all those who have passed from among the Ummah. Ensure you pronounce the Arabic clearly and with proper intonation if reciting in Arabic.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encompasses seeking Allah's forgiveness, mercy, and protection for the deceased. It acknowledges their sins and asks for them to be washed away, much like impurities are removed from clothing. The dua also asks for the deceased to be given a better abode, a better family, and a better spouse in the Hereafter, and crucially, protection from the grave and the Fire. Reciting this is a way to fulfill the rights of the deceased and to show care for the entire Ummah, asking for Allah's ultimate mercy upon all who have left us.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the funeral prayer, and I memorized from his prayer something: He prayed, 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him. Honor his reception, make his entrance wide, and cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.' He said: 'And 'Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i said: 'O Messenger of Allah, may Allah make your hands and feet firm, pray for him so that he may be comforted.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Indeed, I have prayed for him for what I said.' (Sahih Muslim 963)
