أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.
A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq
When to Read
While the specific term 'intellectual property' is a contemporary concept, the principle of safeguarding one's lawful efforts, creations, and blessings from harm, theft, or misuse is deeply rooted in our Islamic tradition. This comprehensive supplication offers general protection from all forms of evil. We can recite this dua whenever we feel apprehension about the safety of our innovations, creative works, scholarly contributions, or any legitimate endeavor that could be subject to unfair appropriation, plagiarism, or harm from others. It's particularly fitting when embarking on new projects, sharing innovative ideas, or whenever you feel concern for the integrity and ownership of your intellectual work. The Prophet ﷺ specifically recommended reciting it in the mornings and evenings for daily protection.
How to Read
Recite this dua with deep sincerity, firmly believing in Allah's absolute power and comprehensive protection. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to say it once or three times, as is common with many protection duas from the Sunnah. Reciting it in the mornings and evenings, as mentioned in the hadith, is especially meritorious. Before starting significant work, sharing sensitive information, or presenting new creations, take a moment to reflect on its profound meaning: you are seeking refuge in Allah's perfect, complete, and unchangeable words – His attributes and decrees – from *any* evil that exists in creation, whether known or unknown, seen or unseen. This encompasses potential harm to your intellectual property.
Virtues & Benefits
The Prophet ﷺ highlighted the immense virtue of this supplication. By reciting it, we place ourselves directly under Allah's ultimate protection, as the hadith indicates that 'nothing shall harm him' who recites it. This protection extends to the fruits of our labor, our innovations, and our intellectual contributions, safeguarding them from those who would steal, misuse, or diminish their value. It instills immense peace of mind, knowing that Allah is the ultimate guardian of our efforts and our rights. Furthermore, this dua reminds us that all blessings, including the ability to innovate and create, originate from Allah, thus prompting us to turn to Him for their preservation. It strengthens our reliance on Allah (Tawakkul) and serves as a spiritual shield against envy, malice, and injustice from others.

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I was stung by a scorpion last night!" He ﷺ said, "If, when you entered the evening, you had said, 'A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created),' it would not have harmed you." — Sahih Muslim 2709
