A Prayer for Our Revered Elders and Vulnerable

For the Ummah
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2713

O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens, and Lord of the magnificent Throne. Our Lord and Lord of all things, the Opener of the grain and the date stone, the Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Criterion (Quran). I seek refuge in You from the evil of all things You seize by their forelocks. O Allah, You are the First, and there is nothing before You; You are the Last, and there is nothing after You; You are the Manifest, and there is nothing above You; You are the Hidden, and there is nothing nearer than You. Pay off our debts for us and enrich us from poverty.

Allahumma Rabba as-samawati as-sab'i, wa Rabba al-'arshil-'adheem, Rabbana wa Rabba kulli shay', Faliq al-habbi wan-nawa, wa Munzil at-Tawrati wal-Injili wal-Furqan. A'udhu bika min sharri kulli shay'in anta akhidhun binasiyatih. Allahumma Antal-Awwalu falaysa qablaka shay', wa Antal-Akhiru falaysa ba'daka shay', wa Anta Adh-Dhāhiru falaysa fawqaka shay', wa Antal-Batinu falaysa duna ka shay'. Iqdi 'anna daynana wa aghnina minal-faqr.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua encompasses seeking Allah's protection and provision, making it suitable for a myriad of situations. We can particularly turn to it when we feel concerned about the state of our elders and vulnerable members of the Ummah, asking Allah to safeguard them from all harm and alleviate any hardship they might be facing. It's a powerful supplication for times of worry or when reflecting on the collective well-being of our community.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and deep conviction, raising your hands as you would during other supplications. Picture in your mind the elderly and vulnerable members of the Ummah as you utter the words. Ensure you understand the meaning of each phrase, allowing it to connect your heart to Allah's infinite power and mercy. It's best recited after obligatory prayers or during times of personal reflection.

Virtues & Benefits

While this specific dua is a general supplication for protection and relief, its inclusion of seeking refuge in Allah from all evil and asking for the removal of debt and poverty carries immense blessings. By asking for Allah's protection for 'all things You seize by their forelocks,' we are implicitly including the most vulnerable among us. This teaches us to generalize our prayers and extend our concern beyond ourselves to the entire Ummah, a core tenet of our faith.

Source & Authentication

‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a debt-ridden man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am a debt-ridden man." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O 'Ali, shall I not teach you a supplication which Allah would certainly fulfill for you, and if you utter it as a debt-ridden man, it would be paid off for you, even if it were as large as a mountain?" 'Ali said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Say: Allahumma Rabba as-samawati as-sab'i, wa Rabba al-'arshil-'adheem, Rabbana wa Rabba kulli shay', Faliq al-habbi wan-nawa, wa Munzil at-Tawrati wal-Injili wal-Furqan. A'udhu bika min sharri kulli shay'in anta akhidhun binasiyatih. Allahumma Antal-Awwalu falaysa qablaka shay', wa Antal-Akhiru falaysa ba'daka shay', wa Anta Adh-Dhāhiru falaysa fawqaka shay', wa Antal-Batinu falaysa duna ka shay'. Iqdi 'anna daynana wa aghnina minal-faqr." (Sahih Muslim 2713)
