A Parent's Shield: Dua for Protecting Children from Harmful Media and Influences

For the Ummah
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1545

O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my property. O Allah, conceal my faults and secure me against my fears. O Allah, guard me from behind me, from my front, from my right, from my left, and from above me. And I seek refuge in Your might from being swallowed from beneath me.

Allahumma inni as'alukal 'afiyah fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal 'afwa wal-'afiyah fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa aamin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfadni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi, wa 'an yameeni wa 'an shimali, wa min fawqi. Wa a'udhu bi'azamatika an ughtala min tahti.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is perfect to recite daily, especially in the morning and evening, asking Allah for His encompassing protection. It's particularly relevant when you feel your children are being exposed to screens or situations where harmful influences might be present. Make it a habit, just as the Prophet ﷺ taught.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, directing your supplication to Allah alone. It's best to raise your hands as the Prophet ﷺ did for supplication. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly internalizing the request for Allah's protection over your children's minds, hearts, and bodies from all unseen and seen harms, including the pervasive influences of media.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful request for Allah's comprehensive protection. By asking for 'Afiyah (well-being), you are asking for safety from all forms of harm, both physical and spiritual. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described this dua as encompassing all the good of this life and the next. Protecting our children from harmful media is a part of this broader request for their well-being, asking Allah to shield them from corrupting influences and guide them towards what is beneficial.

Source & Authentication

Yahya related to me from Malik, from Zuhri, from Humayd ibn 'Abdur Rahman, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The supplication of a servant is granted as long as he does not supplicate for sin or the severing of ties of kinship, as long as he does not show impatience." They asked, "O Messenger of Allah, how does one show impatience?" He said, "To say, 'I have supplicated, I have supplicated, but I have not been answered.'" (Sunan Abi Dawud 1545) *Note: The dua itself is found in other narrations, attributed to the Prophet ﷺ as a supplication he would make.* Another relevant narration from the Prophet ﷺ is: عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "إِذَا سَمِعْتُمُ الْمُؤَذِّنَ فَقُولُوا مِثْلَ مَا يَقُولُ، ثُمَّ صَلُّوا عَلَيَّ، فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ بِهَا عَشْرًا، ثُمَّ سَلُوا اللَّهَ لِي الْوَسِيلَةَ، فَإِنَّهَا مَنْزِلَةٌ فِي الْجَنَّةِ لَا تَنْبَغِي إِلَّا لِعَبْدٍ مِنْ عِبَادِ اللَّهِ، وَأَرْجُو أَنْ أَكُونَ أَنَا هُوَ، فَمَنْ سَأَلَ لِي الْوَسِيلَةَ حَلَّتْ لَهُ الشَّفَاعَةُ" **Arabic:** اَللّٰهُمَّ رَبَّ هٰذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ، وَالصَّلَاةِ الْقَائِمَةِ، آتِ مُحَمَّدًا اَلْوَسِيلَةَ وَالْفَضِيلَةَ، وَابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَّحْمُودًا الَّذِي وَعَدْتَهُ **Translation:** "O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and established prayer, grant Muhammad the means and superiority, and raise him to the praised station which You have promised him." **Transliteration:** *Allahumma Rabba hadhihi ad-da'watit-tammah, was-salatil-qa'imah, ATI Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadhilah, wab'ath-hu maqaman mahmudan alladhi wa'adtah. **Source:** Sahih al-Bukhari 614 This second hadith, while about a specific time (after the adhan), teaches us the principle of asking Allah for specific stations and protection for our community, which extends to asking for protection for our children.
