اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى
O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment (or self-sufficiency).
Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina
When to Read
This is a profound du'a that can be recited anytime, but it's particularly potent when we feel our faith wavering or when facing specific situations that test our resolve. We can make it a part of our daily supplications after prayer, or during moments of quiet reflection when we feel a need for spiritual fortification for ourselves and for the entire Ummah.
How to Read
This du'a is a sincere plea directly to Allah. Raise your hands as you would in any supplication, face the Qiblah if possible, and recite it with a sincere heart, contemplating the meaning of each word. Focus on asking Allah to bestow these qualities upon you and, by extension, upon the whole Ummah. The act of asking itself is an acknowledgement of our dependence on Him.
Virtues & Benefits
This powerful du'a encapsulates a comprehensive request for spiritual well-being. 'Guidance' (Al-Huda) is the knowledge and ability to follow the right path. 'Piety' (At-Tuqa) is to have Taqwa, to be conscious of Allah and avoid His displeasure. 'Chastity' (Al-'Afaf) refers to purity and refraining from unlawful desires and actions. 'Contentment' or 'self-sufficiency' (Al-Ghina) means being satisfied with what Allah has provided, thus reducing need and reliance on anything other than Him. By asking for these, we are essentially asking for protection against temptations and the strength to live a life pleasing to Allah, a strength vital for the entire Muslim community.
