A Du'a for Protection from Usury and Exploitative Finance

For the Ummah
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of the Fire, and from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal). O Allah, I seek refuge in You from old age, and from sin and heavy debt. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of afflictions, and the attainment of misery, and evil decree, and the rejoicing of enemies. O Allah, I ask You for guidance, and piety, and chastity, and contentment (or freedom from need).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa min 'adhab an-nar, wa min fitnat al-hayat wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-haram, wal-matham wal-maghram. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min juhd al-bala', wa darak ash-shaqa', wa su' al-qada', wa shamatat al-a'da'. Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina.

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication is perfect for reciting during times of distress, when reflecting on the struggles of the Ummah, or as a daily protection. It's particularly relevant when one is contemplating financial matters, facing economic hardship, or witnessing the prevalence of usury and unfair financial practices. Making this a habit, perhaps after each obligatory prayer, can instill a sense of reliance on Allah and a plea for His safeguarding.

How to Read

Recite with sincere intention and heartfelt conviction. Face the Qiblah if possible, and begin with praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Raise your hands in supplication as is the practice, and maintain a state of humility and hope in Allah's mercy. Reflect on the meaning of each phrase as you recite it, internalizing the plea for protection and guidance.

Virtues & Benefits

This du'a encompasses protection from major afflictions, both worldly and in the hereafter. Seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave and the Fire are paramount. The mention of 'sin and heavy debt' (al-matham wal-maghram) directly relates to burdens that can weigh down an individual and, by extension, the Ummah, often exacerbated by exploitative financial systems. Furthermore, seeking guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment are the cornerstones of a righteous and stable life, shielding one from the temptations and negative consequences of unlawful wealth and unjust economic dealings. This du'a seeks holistic well-being, protecting the Ummah from the spiritual and material decay that usury and exploitation can bring.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allah from four things, reciting: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, wa min 'adhab an-nar, wa min fitnat al-hayat wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnat al-masih ad-dajjal.' And he used to seek refuge from four things, reciting: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-haram, wal-matham wal-maghram.' And one narrator asked him, 'O Allah's Messenger, why is it that you so frequently seek refuge from heavy debt?' He replied, 'A person when in debt talks in speech but he keeps on lying and promises but he breaks his promises.' Then he sought refuge from the hardship of affliction, bad luck, and evil destiny and the rejoicing of the enemies. He also used to say: 'O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment.'
