Travel
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

When to Read

This profound dua is particularly relevant when embarking on a journey, whether it's a short trip or a long voyage. As you prepare to leave the safety and familiarity of your home, you are stepping into a world with unknown elements. The 'misleading paths' aren't just physical roads that could lead you astray, but also the temptations, doubts, and negative influences that one might encounter during travel. Reciting this before or at the start of your journey invokes Allah's protection and guidance through all these potential challenges.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a hopeful heart. It's best said as you are about to depart your home or just as your journey begins. Raise your hands if you are alone, or say it with the intention of seeking Allah's help alongside fellow travelers. Focus on the meaning of each word: asking for the right direction (huda), the consciousness to fear Allah (tuqa), purity from sin and needing nothing from others (afaf), and inner richness that makes you content with what Allah provides (ghina).

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is comprehensive, seeking four essential qualities that protect a believer from falling into error and misguidance, especially when away from home. Guidance (huda) keeps you on the straight path, piety (tuqa) makes you mindful of Allah in all your actions, chastity (afaf) guards your honor and modesty, and contentment (ghina) shields you from the greed and desperation that can lead to wrongdoing. By asking for these, we are essentially asking Allah to protect our faith, our character, and our peace of mind throughout our travels.
