O Allah, I ask You in this journey for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make the earth easy for us to traverse, and be our representative among our families. Bless our wealth and our children for us. Cover us (protect us) in Your land. Protect us as You protected Your Remembrance. We come to You and to You we return. By You we live, by You we die, and to You is the final destination. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. There is no might nor power except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great. Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs. Glory be to Allah wherever I may be.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is recited when embarking on a journey. It encompasses requests for spiritual well-being, protection for oneself and one's family left behind, and general reliance on Allah for safety and guidance. The latter part, 'Subhanallahi haythu kuntu' (Glory be to Allah wherever I may be), can be recited continuously while traveling for constant remembrance and seeking Allah's protection from all sorts of evils, including the potential for bad company.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction when you are about to depart on a journey. Raise your hands in supplication as you would for other duas. The part about seeking Allah's glory wherever you are can be repeated regularly during your travels.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua covers multiple aspects of travel: spiritual preparation ('birr wa taqwa'), seeking acceptance of deeds, safety for the journey ('ahwi bina al-ard'), care for the family left behind ('akhlafna fi ahlina'), blessings in wealth and children ('barik lana fi malina wa waladina'), divine protection ('usturna fi ardik, wahfazna bima hafizta bihi dhikrak'), and ultimately, acknowledging Allah's sovereignty over life and death ('bika nahya wa bika namutu, wa ilaykal-maseer'). The inclusion of 'Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakeel' (Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs) is a powerful affirmation of trust in Allah, which is crucial when encountering unknown circumstances or potentially negative influences, such as bad companions, on a journey.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to recite the following supplication when he set out on a journey: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka fi safari hadha al-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal 'amali ma tarda, Allahumma ahwi bina al-ard, wakhlafna fi ahlina, wa barik lana fi malina wa waladina, wasturna fi ardik, wahfazna bima hafizta bihi dhikrak, wa iyyaka naji'u wa iyyaka narji'u, wa bika nahya wa bika namutu, wa ilaykal-maseer, wal-hamdu lillahi Rabbil-'alamin, la hawla wa la quwwata illa billahil-'Aliyyil-'Adhim, wa hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakeel, subhanallahi haythu kuntu.'
