Dua for God-Fearing Companions on a Journey

Travel
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 2604

O Allah, I ask You in this journey of mine for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us, protect us from the dust of evil, and grant us righteous companionship. Help us to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best manner.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi safari hadha al-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-'amali ma tarda, Allahumma ahwi bina tariqana, wakfina ghabara as-saw', warzuqna rifqatan salihah, wa a'inna 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatika.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a clear intention of seeking Allah's protection and good company. Face the direction of travel if possible, and raise your hands slightly in supplication. It's also beneficial to make a similar intention when asking others to join you or when choosing companions, looking for those who are mindful of Allah and have good character.

Virtues & Benefits

The primary benefit of this dua is seeking Allah's protection and guidance throughout your journey. Specifically asking for righteous companionship safeguards you from negative influences and provides support, shared remembrance of Allah, and mutual encouragement in good deeds. It ensures your journey is not just a physical movement but also a spiritual one, full of blessings and opportunities for worship.

Source & Authentication

The Hadith that relates to seeking good companionship in travel is profound. While the specific dua above synthesizes the need for righteous company, a foundational principle is found in the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ teachings. He ﷺ said: 'If a person travels alone, he is followed by Satan; if two people travel together, they are followed by Satan; but if three travel together, then the caravan is established.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 2608). This highlights the importance of company, and the dua specifically asks for *righteous* company, which is even more beneficial, guiding us away from the potential pitfalls of traveling.
