Travel
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1342

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ

Glory be to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we could never have accomplished it by ourselves. And indeed, to our Lord we will return.

Subhanalladhee sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrilineen, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqaliboon.

When to Read

This powerful dua is traditionally recited when embarking on a journey, particularly when seeing something new or awe-inspiring. As a traveler, when you witness the vastness of the sky, the intricate designs of mountains, the endless expanse of the sea, or the diverse flora and fauna, this is the perfect moment to pause and make this supplication. It serves as a reminder of Allah's power and our ultimate return to Him, fostering deep reflection on His creation during your travels.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a present heart, preferably when you first begin your journey or encounter a new sight in nature. Raise your hands slightly as you recite, if appropriate for the situation, and reflect on the meaning of the words: acknowledging Allah's perfect power in making things subservient to us, and remembering that our journey through this life is temporary, leading us back to our Creator.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua acknowledges Allah's sovereignty and power over His creation, reminding the traveler of their humble place within it. It fosters gratitude for the means Allah provides for travel and the wonders of His creation. The reflection on returning to Allah instills taqwa (God-consciousness) and humility, making the travel experience a spiritual journey of remembrance, not just a physical one. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that when we travel, we are in the care of Allah, and this dua reinforces that connection.

Source & Authentication

Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out on a journey and mounted his camel, he would say the takbir three times, then he would say: 'Glory be to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we could never have accomplished it by ourselves. And indeed, to our Lord we will return. O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey of ours, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and let us cover a long distance. O Allah, You are the companion on the journey and the successor in the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of the journey, from seeing an evil sight and from encountering misfortune in property and family.' When he returned, he would say these words and also: 'We are returning in repentance, seeking forgiveness, worshipping our Lord, and praising Him.' And he did not miss saying it and performing it.
